Kit Fox Translocation

Return of the Kit Fox

The kit fox reintroduction at Cienega Ranch is Wildlife in Motion's flagship species recovery program. In Year 1, three male-female pairs (6 foxes) were released. In Year 2, four additional females were released — two fitted with Lotek GPS collars for monthly monitoring of home-range size and denning behavior. Ten artificial dens were built across the ranch, and a soft-release enclosure was constructed on-site. In Spring 2025, camera traps captured what we had hoped to see: pups. The first documented reproduction at this site in living memory — achieved in season one of the reintroduction.

A Coordinated Effort

The kit fox reintroduction is a multi-year partnership anchored by Wildlife in Motion and Cienega Ranch, with key support from the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center, Arizona Game and Fish Department, Patrick Wildlife Services, and Longroad Construction. This collaboration spans carnivore management, GPS collar monitoring, den infrastructure, and on-site field operations — all working together to support the long-term recovery of the kit fox in the Sky Islands.

The Journey to Translocation

Prior to each release, kit foxes were held at the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center for health assessment, vaccinations, and acclimation. The reintroduction protocol was coordinated with Arizona Game and Fish Department under active wildlife permits, with field biologists and carnivore specialists on site for every release. Artificial dens were pre-installed and a soft-release enclosure was built to ease the foxes' transition to Cienega Ranch before full dispersal into the landscape.

Importance of Kit Fox Monitoring

Kit Fox Tracking

Using GPS collars, our team has been monitoring fox movement. This information helps us evaluate the success of our habitat restoration efforts and guides future conservation strategies. So far, we’ve observed promising signs of the foxes adapting to their environment, with activity centered around the restored grasslands and den complexes.

Why Kit Foxes Matter

Kit foxes are not just a symbol of the desert’s resilience; they are a keystone species whose presence supports the health of their ecosystem. By reintroducing them to the Sky Islands, we are not only helping this species recover but also restoring balance to the entire habitat.

Looking Forward

Our next steps include expanding our monitoring efforts and sharing the story of the kit foxes with broader audiences. We are also engaging with neighboring ranches to explore opportunities for creating larger wildlife corridors that ensure connectivity across the landscape.

Your support makes this work possible. Together, we’re building a future where wildlife thrives. Stay tuned for updates on our kit fox project and other conservation initiatives. Let’s make 2025 a year of impactful action for biodiversity!
